Exclusive: Sudan Live

The Sudanese government has opened the door to direct negotiations with the United States and various regional and international parties as part of efforts to end the war in Sudan, while emphasizing that any political settlement must respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Sudanese Foreign Minister Mohieddin Salem stated during a press conference at the United Nations headquarters in New York that the government is prepared to engage with efforts led by the United States—alongside Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Pakistan, China, and Turkey—as well as regional and international organizations concerned with the Sudanese crisis.

The entities mentioned by the Minister included the Arab League, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the United Nations; he commended the efforts these parties are making to halt the fighting and reach a settlement to the conflict.

According to *Sudan Live*, the government’s position is based on a readiness to negotiate and engage with proposed initiatives, while simultaneously setting conditions regarding the nature of any potential agreement and the guarantees required to preserve Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Salem emphasized that Khartoum would not accept any political path—however proposed—if it involved external arrangements that infringed upon the country’s sovereignty or territorial integrity. He stressed that ending the war requires addressing the root causes of the conflict and achieving a political settlement.

What did the government say about the outbreak of the war?

Discussing the background of the war, the Foreign Minister stated that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were previously part of the Armed Forces before engaging in what he described as a “rebellion.” Salem also accused certain parties of providing substantial funding for what he described as a plot predating the outbreak of hostilities, noting that preparations had begun well before the fighting actually started.

The *Sudan Live* editor noted that these statements come at a time of increasing focus on the political track as a potential avenue for ending the war, coinciding with ongoing international and regional efforts regarding the Sudanese crisis.

**The Jeddah Track Returns to the Forefront**

The Foreign Minister highlighted the Sudanese government’s participation in the Jeddah platform since the war’s inception, stating that state institutions engaged in the negotiation process with the aim of halting the fighting and approached the talks seriously and constructively.

He explained that previous negotiations had yielded understandings that were not fully implemented, holding the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) responsible for obstructing their execution.

*Sudan Live* reported that the Minister’s remarks place the Jeddah platform—alongside other international and regional initiatives—within the broader context of efforts to end the war, as various parties seek a formula that could lead to a cessation of hostilities and a political settlement.

The *Sudan Live* editor observed that the government’s stated position balances openness to negotiation with international and regional actors against a firm insistence on core principles regarding Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The next phase hinges on the ability of the proposed initiatives to unite Sudanese parties around a viable negotiation track, particularly as the war drags on and multiple international and regional efforts continue to pursue a ceasefire and a resolution to the conflict.
