The death toll from heavy rains and floods in Nile River State has risen to ten people, including women and children, after the collapse of several houses in the localities of Damer, Shendi, and Matammah.

Nile River State Governor offers condolences to victims’ families

On Wednesday, Nile River State Governor Mohamed Al-Badawi Abdel-Majid conducted a field tour in the city of Damer and several affected neighborhoods, where he extended condolences to the families of six citizens who lost their lives after their houses collapsed due to the rains. The governor was accompanied by Minister of Social Welfare Tehani Mirghani Abdel-Hafiz, Damer Locality’s Executive Director Mohamed Mohamdo, in addition to leaders from the police and the General Intelligence Service.

Rising death toll in Shendi and Matammah

During the visit, the governor moved between the areas of Al-Sha’denab South and Block 38 in Shendi and Matammah localities, where the number of victims rose to ten according to official reports. Local authorities confirmed that the prolonged rains caused severe damage to housing infrastructure, further worsening the suffering of residents in low-lying areas.

Official efforts to support those affected

The governor announced that the state government will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide necessary support to families who lost their homes, either partially or completely. According to Sudan Live’s correspondent, the governor’s field tour comes as part of official efforts to assess damages and evaluate urgent needs of residents, especially in light of the ongoing effects of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the possibility of more rainfall.

Urgent call to residents of flood-prone areas

Authorities urged residents in low-lying areas of Nile River State to exercise caution in anticipation of any emergency in the coming days. They confirmed that emergency teams are on full alert to intervene and provide humanitarian assistance when needed. According to Sudan Live’s correspondent, the humanitarian situation is likely to worsen unless relief efforts are urgently strengthened.
