Trump praises the idea of making Canada the 51st US state
Donald Trump once again suggested on social media that Canada be the 51st US state, noting that this possibility is an “excellent idea” while the neighboring country is witnessing a severe political crisis.
The US President-elect added on his platform, Truth Social, that Canadians “will pay less money for taxes and military protection.” I think it’s an excellent idea. The 51st (American) state!!!
He explained: “Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st state.” A poll conducted by the Ledger Institute last week showed that 13 percent of Canadians want their country to become a US state.
Trump made his first remark about the “51st term” during a dinner party with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the end of November.
During the meeting, Trump joked that if Canada could not deal with 25 percent tariffs, it could become the 51st US state, according to Fox News.
Since then, he has repeatedly described the Canadian Prime Minister in letters as a governor, which is a rank that describes the head of the executive authority in an American state.
The political class in Canada received these messages with resentment and saw them as an American humiliation or even an American threat.
This worries Canadians even more, especially since the country is going through a political crisis after the sudden resignation of Trudeau’s deputy on Monday. Because of disagreements with the Prime Minister over how to deal with the looming economic war with the powerful American ally.
Trump’s intention to increase tariffs to 25 percent with Mexico and Canada caused a shock in Canada, which sends 75 percent of its exports to its neighbor and first partner.
In terms of jobs, about two million people in Canada depend on exports out of a population of 41 million.
